The short answer
- Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid (HA) filler. It starts working immediately, and most of the change shows within 24 to 48 hours.
- It only works on HA fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal and Belotero. Radiesse, Sculptra and permanent fillers cannot be dissolved with it.
- Published Dubai prices start at AED 500 to 1,200 per session, run to about AED 2,000 for larger jobs, and start around AED 2,250 for ultrasound-guided complication care (clinic websites, September 2026).
- Wait at least two weeks after your last session before any new filler, the minimum set by a UK clinical guideline.
- White or blue-grey skin, severe pain or vision changes after filler is an emergency. Go straight back to the injecting clinic or to a hospital emergency department.
- Dissolving is a doctor's job. In Dubai, fillers are prescription-only and must be injected by a licensed physician, so check the doctor's DHA licence before you book.
Most people who look up filler dissolving are unhappy with something specific: lips heavier than planned, a ridge of filler above the lip line, a lump that has not settled, or a blue-grey shadow under the eyes that was not there before. Hyaluronic acid filler was designed to be reversible, and correcting it is usually quick.
It is still a medical treatment with limits of its own: it does not work on every filler, it can take more than one session, and published Dubai prices run from AED 500 to more than AED 2,000 a session.
What is hyaluronidase and how does it dissolve filler?
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks hyaluronic acid (HA) into fragments the body can clear. The injectable form, which many Dubai clinics call Hyalase after a common brand, is placed into and around the unwanted filler, where it breaks the cross-links holding the gel together, so the filler clears like the body's own short-lived HA.
It works fast. A 2024 review in JMIR Dermatology describes an immediate effect, a half-life of about two minutes and a working window of 24 to 48 hours, so most of the change is visible within two days while the swelling takes a few more to settle. Dubai clinics typically book 20 to 30 minutes for the appointment.
Because the enzyme is broken down so quickly, it has to be placed close to the filler, in a dose matched to the amount and type of gel. The same drug is used in tiny amounts to soften one lump under the eye and in large, repeated doses to clear a blocked artery, which is why dissolving is a doctor's judgement call rather than a fixed recipe.
Can all filler be dissolved?
No. Hyaluronidase only breaks down hyaluronic acid, so the first question before any dissolving appointment is what was actually injected.
| Filler type | Common examples | Dissolvable with hyaluronidase? | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyaluronic acid (HA) gel | Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal, Belotero | Yes | Often one session; firmer, more cross-linked gels can need more. |
| Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) | Radiesse | No | The enzyme has no effect on it. Problems need a different plan. |
| Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) | Sculptra | No | Works by stimulating collagen, which an injection cannot reverse. |
| Permanent fillers | PMMA, liquid silicone | No | Problems need a specialist, and sometimes surgical removal. |
If you had Radiesse or Sculptra, hyaluronidase will not help, and a clinic offering to "dissolve" either should explain exactly what it plans to inject instead. Not sure what you had? Ask the injecting clinic for your record. The Dubai Health Authority requires the patient file to contain marked drawings of where the procedure was done, and a careful clinic notes the product and volume too. Failing that, ultrasound can often show whether a deposit looks like HA.
When is dissolving filler the right fix?
Dissolving makes sense when the problem is the filler itself: where it sits, how much of it there is, or how the tissue is reacting to it.
| Problem | What it looks like | Usual approach |
|---|---|---|
| Overfilled lips | Lips heavier or wider than planned, a top lip that juts forward, a blurred lip border | Partial dissolving to reduce, or a full reset before a smaller re-treatment |
| Migration | Filler drifting beyond where it was placed, such as a ridge above the lip line | Targeted doses at the migrated filler; ultrasound helps when it cannot be felt |
| Lumps | Firm bumps that remain once the swelling has gone | Small doses into the lump; inflamed nodules usually need antibiotics as well |
| Tyndall effect | A blue-grey tinge where HA sits too close to the surface, most often under the eyes | Low doses, placed precisely |
| Asymmetry | One side fuller or higher than the other | Small, targeted doses on the fuller side |
| Vascular occlusion | Filler blocking a blood vessel: pain, then white or mottled skin | Emergency treatment with high, repeated doses straight away |
The Tyndall effect can look like dark circles. When HA sits too superficially in thin skin, the gel scatters blue light and the area looks grey or blue, sometimes darker than before the treatment. It is one of the clearest cases for dissolving, and the doses are small: the 2024 review lists 10 to 75 units for it, against 450 to 1,500 units in total for an emergency protocol. If you are still weighing under-eye filler in Dubai, raise this risk at the consultation.
With lips, some people want the filler gone and others only want less of it. Partial dissolving is possible with low doses, but the enzyme cannot tell the filler you dislike from the filler you want to keep, so some loss beyond the target is always possible. Our guide to lip fillers in Dubai covers what a sensible volume looks like if you go again.
Old filler is a quieter reason. In a 2022 MRI case report, HA in the mid-face was still visible 27 months after injection, while chin filler had almost gone by 19 months. One case is not a rule, but mention every filler you have ever had, not only the latest.
The dissolving filler process, step by step
A careful appointment follows this order, based on the published guidance and what Dubai clinics describe.
- A face-to-face assessment. The doctor examines the area and asks what was injected, when, how much and where. In Dubai this must be in person: the DHA standard does not accept remote or home-visit assessments for cosmetic procedures.
- Allergy screening. Most hyaluronidase comes from sheep or cattle, and bee and wasp venom contains the same enzyme, so expect questions about previous reactions and stings. A UK guideline advises that anyone who has had anaphylaxis to a sting sees an allergy specialist first. Some Dubai clinics do a small skin test and wait about 20 minutes, but the guideline notes these tests are not validated, so a clear result reassures rather than guarantees.
- Consent. Hyaluronidase is licensed to help other injected drugs and fluids spread through tissue, not to dissolve filler, so this use is off-label in the UK and the US and you should be told. The DHA also requires written consent, reconfirmed on the day.
- The injections. After numbing cream, the doctor injects small amounts into and around the filler, sometimes under ultrasound, and may massage the area to spread the enzyme. It stings briefly, and the injections take a few minutes.
- Review, and repeat if needed. Expect swelling, redness and possibly bruising for a couple of days. The UK guideline suggests reassessing after 48 hours and repeating if necessary, and Dubai clinics typically describe the result as settled within one to two weeks.
The type of gel matters. In a study cited by the 2024 review, Juvederm Voluma needed higher doses to dissolve than Restylane-L or Juvederm Ultra, and denser, more heavily cross-linked gels are generally more resistant, so a firm cheek or jaw product may need more than one round. Our comparison of Juvederm and Restylane explains how the two ranges' gels differ.
Ultrasound-guided filler dissolving: what does it add?
Ultrasound-guided dissolving means the doctor scans the area with a high-frequency probe before and during the injections, so the enzyme goes where the filler actually is rather than where it is assumed to be. The 2024 review describes high-frequency ultrasound as a first-line tool for identifying and measuring filler. HA shows up as dark pockets on the screen, which helps with migrated filler that can no longer be felt, products nobody can name, filler close to blood vessels (visible in Doppler mode) and leftover filler after a first session.
The strongest evidence comes from emergencies. A 2025 systematic review and case series covering 83 cases found rapid resolution of blocked-vessel complications with ultrasound-guided injections, and in one comparison of 39 patients the guided approach used about 123 units of enzyme against an average of about 1,519 units with the conventional "flooding" method, with faster recovery. The authors grade this as level 3 evidence, built on case series and small comparisons rather than randomised trials.
For a simple overfilled lip where the gel can be felt, ultrasound usually adds little. It earns its premium for migrated or old filler, unknown products, the under-eye area, repeat attempts and suspected vascular problems, and only in skilled hands: reading a facial scan takes real anatomical and sonographic expertise.
How much does filler dissolving cost in Dubai?
Published Dubai prices for a single dissolving session start between AED 500 and AED 1,200, and most sessions fall between about AED 700 and AED 2,000 depending on the area and the amount of filler. Ultrasound-guided work costs more. The figures below come from eight Dubai clinics' own websites, checked in September 2026.
| What you are paying for | Where the figure comes from | Published price (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Single session, entry price | Starting prices at five clinics | AED 500 to 1,200 |
| One area, such as the lips | One doctor-led practice: AED 1,000 standard, AED 700 on offer | AED 700 to 1,000 |
| Several areas or a large volume | The same practice: from AED 2,000 standard, from AED 1,400 on offer | From AED 1,400 |
| Typical session range | Quoted by a multi-branch clinic group for Dubai and Abu Dhabi | AED 700 to 2,000 |
| Ultrasound-guided dissolving and complication care | A practice that specialises in filler complications | From AED 2,250 |
| Dissolving a clinic's own lip filler | One clinic advertises this if you are unhappy with its work | Free |
None of the clinics checked publishes a separate under-eye dissolving price. The eye area takes less enzyme but more care, so ask whether the quote changes for it.
Before comparing quotes, ask whether the price is per session or per vial of enzyme, whether a second session is charged in full, and whether the review appointment and any ultrasound are included. For the filler itself, see what dermal fillers cost in Dubai, and remember that a bargain syringe dissolved and redone can cost more than a careful first treatment, one of the hidden costs in our guide to the dangers of cheap fillers in the UAE.
How long after dissolving filler can you get filler again?
Wait at least two weeks after your last dissolving session, and longer if the area is still swollen. That is the minimum set by a UK aesthetic complications guideline, and Dubai doctors who publish a figure quote two to four weeks.
The enzyme is not the reason: it is inactive after about 48 hours, so it will not break down new filler. Swelling is the reason. Until it settles, neither you nor the injector can see your real starting point, and filler placed into a swollen area is placed by guesswork. Use the gap to decide whether you want filler back at all. If you do, start smaller than before and ask what went wrong the first time: the product, the volume, the placement or the injector.
Risks and side effects of dissolving filler
For most people the side effects are short-lived: stinging during the injections, then swelling, redness, tenderness and sometimes bruising for a few days. The less common risks are worth knowing before you book.
- Allergy. Immediate allergic reactions at aesthetic doses are rare, around 1 in 1,000 according to the 2024 review, and a UK guideline puts the risk of anaphylaxis lower still. Clinics should keep adrenaline on hand and observe you for a short time afterwards, since reactions usually start within minutes.
- Over-dissolving. The review notes that dissolving can remove at least part of the effect you wanted to keep, and doctors who publish their risk lists include a temporary flat or deflated look while the tissue settles. Filler can be added back once the swelling has gone.
- Your own hyaluronic acid. The enzyme also breaks down the HA your skin makes naturally, but the body restores it within 15 to 20 hours, and the review concludes there is no long-term harm to skin quality.
- Uneven or incomplete results. Firm gels, large volumes and filler that is hard to locate can dissolve unevenly, which is what the review appointment is for.
- Timing with Botox. A UK guideline advises against injecting hyaluronidase where botulinum toxin was given in the previous 48 hours, so tell the doctor about any recent Botox.
Vascular occlusion: when is dissolving an emergency?
Dissolving becomes an emergency when filler blocks or presses on a blood vessel and cuts off the blood supply to the tissue it feeds, a complication called vascular occlusion. It is uncommon, but it is the reason any clinic that injects HA filler should keep hyaluronidase on site.
Signs usually appear during the injection or shortly after. Pain is often the first symptom, then the skin may turn white, followed by a mottled, lacy pattern and a grey-blue colour as the tissue runs short of oxygen. Filler injected around the nose, between the brows or on the forehead can occasionally travel back towards the artery that supplies the eye, which is why any change in vision is the most urgent sign of all.
After any filler treatment, treat these as an emergency:
- Skin that turns white (blanching), or is slow to turn pink again after you press it
- Severe or unusual pain, out of proportion to a normal injection
- A mottled, lacy, purple or blue-grey pattern on the skin
- Any change in vision: blurring, dark patches, double vision or loss of sight
- Signs of a stroke: a drooping face, weakness or numbness, slurred speech, a sudden severe headache or confusion
Go straight back to the clinic that injected you, which should have hyaluronidase on site, or to the nearest hospital emergency department. For vision changes or signs of a stroke, call 998 for an ambulance. Do not wait for a scheduled review or rely on sending photos.
Speed matters. The 2024 review recommends treatment as soon as possible, ideally within four hours; in one animal study, hyaluronidase shrank the damaged area when given within four hours but not after 24. Emergency doses are far higher than cosmetic ones, repeated roughly every 15 to 20 minutes until blood flow returns, and sudden vision loss also needs urgent care from an eye specialist, according to a 2024 review of vascular complications.
Who can dissolve filler in the UAE?
A licensed doctor. Under the Dubai Health Authority's Standards for Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures (version 2.1, in force since February 2025), cosmetic fillers are prescription-only medicine that only a trained and privileged licensed physician may administer, in a DHA-licensed facility permitted to offer dermatology or plastic surgery. The standard does not name hyaluronidase, but the enzyme is a prescription medicine in the UK and the US, and dissolving is part of managing filler, so it belongs with the same doctor-led care.
The standard also makes a face-to-face consultation mandatory, requires written consent reconfirmed on the day, and expects the practitioner who treated you to be available for follow-up care. In Abu Dhabi the regulator is the Department of Health (DOH), and in the northern emirates it is the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). Wherever you are, check the doctor's licence on the official register before you book, and walk away from dissolving offered in a salon, at home or in a hotel room, or sold as a do-it-yourself kit.
