The short answer

  • All three are HIFU machines. Ultraformer (Classys) and Liftera (Asterasys) are Korean; Ultherapy (Merz Aesthetics) is the American original. All three heat tissue at about 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm to trigger collagen remodelling.
  • Only Ultherapy has live imaging and FDA clearance. As of September 2026 the FDA database lists no Ultraformer or Liftera clearance.
  • Ultraformer vs Liftera is closer than the marketing suggests. Ultraformer has more cartridges and a faster MP mode; Liftera 2 adds a pen applicator. No published trial compares them.
  • Expect millimetres, not a facelift. Results build over two to three months and suit mild to moderate laxity. Heavy sagging is a surgical problem.
  • Dubai clinics publish Ultraformer at about AED 4,000 to 5,000 for a full face, Liftera from AED 799 and Ultherapy for the face and neck at AED 12,000 to 14,000. The operator and shot count matter more than the logo, so check the clinic's DHA licence first.

Dubai HIFU offers run from a few hundred dirhams to more than AED 10,000 for what sounds like the same treatment. It is not the same treatment. HIFU is a category, and the machine, the number of shots and the person holding the handpiece decide most of what you get. The three names you will meet most often are Ultraformer, Liftera and Ultherapy.

This guide compares the machines: who makes them, how deep they fire, what the newer modes change, which ones a regulator has reviewed, and what Dubai clinics charge for each. If you are still deciding whether ultrasound tightening suits you at all, start with our overview of HIFU in Dubai.

What each machine actually is

Ultraformer, Liftera and Ultherapy are all high-intensity focused ultrasound devices: each focuses energy into tiny points beneath the skin, heats them enough to coagulate the tissue (Classys puts it above 60°C), and relies on your healing response to firm it over the following months, while the skin surface stays intact.

Ultraformer (Classys, South Korea)

Ultraformer is made by Classys in Seoul and is the name you are most likely to see on a Dubai HIFU menu. Ultraformer III, often written Ultraformer 3, combines micro-focused cartridges for precise points in the face with macro-focused cartridges that go deeper, mainly to reduce fat on the body, plus a 2.0 mm cartridge for fine lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead. Ultraformer MPT is the current generation, with ten cartridges: face depths of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.5 mm, body depths of 6.0, 9.0 and 13 mm, and circular booster cartridges at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm. Neither generation has live imaging, so the operator places each pass by anatomy and experience.

Liftera (Asterasys, South Korea)

Liftera is made by Asterasys, another Korean company, which brands its delivery as Thermal Diffusion Treatment (TDT). The current model, Liftera 2 (Liftera-A2), pairs a line cartridge, firing rows of points at 1.5 and 3.0 mm (7 MHz) and 4.5 mm (4 MHz), with a pen applicator at the same depths for small, curved areas. Its specifications list no imaging. Distributors market it as less painful than conventional HIFU, but we found no study testing that claim and no peer-reviewed Liftera trial in PubMed.

Ultherapy (Merz Aesthetics, United States)

Ultherapy, sold by Merz Aesthetics and now in its Ultherapy PRIME version, treats at 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm and, alone among the three, adds a DeepSEE imaging transducer that shows the tissue layers down to 8 mm. The FDA describes that imaging modestly: it confirms the transducer is properly coupled to the skin and that the depth is right, for example to avoid bone. It does not show collagen forming or guarantee a bigger lift. Our full Ultherapy guide covers its results and costs in depth.

Where Sofwave and Doublo fit

Sofwave is ultrasound-based and FDA-cleared, but it is not HIFU in the usual sense: its FDA summary describes heating the dermis at 1 to 2 mm while actively cooling the skin surface, not the deeper 4.5 mm layer. It is cleared for facial lines, brow lift, and under-chin and neck lift. Doublo, made by Hironic in Korea, is another focused ultrasound machine; the only FDA clearance under its name (NEW DOUBLO 2.0, 2025) covers a radiofrequency microneedling device, not HIFU.

Ultraformer vs Liftera vs Ultherapy, side by side

On paper the three machines share the same core face depths; the real differences are cartridge range, delivery pattern, imaging and regulatory review.

The Korean machines are closer than their marketing suggests, and Ultherapy's premium buys live imaging and FDA-reviewed evidence for specific areas, not a different mechanism. Whether it also buys a bigger lift is exactly what an ongoing Classys trial is testing.

Ultraformer III vs Ultraformer MPT: what MP mode actually changes

MP mode changes the speed and pattern of delivery, not the depth: Classys says it delivers energy 2.5 times faster than normal mode, as a dense line of heat points rather than spaced dots.

"Micro" and "macro" are not new to the MPT. They describe the two kinds of focus Ultraformer III already had: micro-focused points in the face layers, and deeper, denser macro-focused energy aimed at fat on the body. What the MPT generation added is the micro-pulsed mode, which Classys describes as broad heating across the target zone.

In practice that means a shorter session and, Classys says, a more comfortable one. It does not mean deeper reach or a bigger lift: Classys lists the MPT's maximum output setting as 2.0 joules against 3.0 joules for Ultraformer III. If a clinic charges much more for MPT, ask what changes in the protocol. An experienced operator with an Ultraformer III and an agreed shot count can be a better buy than an MPT run at low energy to keep you comfortable.

Which of these machines is FDA-cleared?

Only Ultherapy: as of September 2026 the FDA's 510(k) database lists no clearance for any Ultraformer or Liftera model, which we checked by device name and by manufacturer.

Ultherapy was first authorised in 2009 to lift the eyebrow, then cleared to lift lax tissue under the chin and on the neck (2012), to improve lines on the chest (2014), and to improve skin laxity on the abdomen, arms and knees (2025 and 2026). Its DeepSEE imaging is part of the cleared system. "Cleared to lift" is a measured, limited claim, not a promise of a facelift result.

Ultraformer is absent, although Classys holds FDA clearances for other devices. In 2025 Classys registered a randomised US trial comparing a newer model, Ultraformer MPT PLUS, with Ultherapy for lifting under the chin and on the neck. The registry lists the device as under an FDA investigational device exemption, the trial as still recruiting, and no results. Liftera is absent too; the only FDA clearance we found for Asterasys is for a radiofrequency device.

What "not FDA-cleared" means in the UAE

FDA clearance is not required to use a device here. The Dubai Health Authority requires devices used for cosmetic procedures to be registered and approved under the Ministry of Health and Prevention's medical device rules, so a genuine, registered Ultraformer or Liftera is legal in Dubai. What you should not accept is a clinic calling either one "FDA approved". Ask for the 510(k) number. There is none to give.

What results to expect, and how long they last

Expect a gradual, modest firming, measured in millimetres and building over two to three months, whichever machine you choose.

The heated points tighten slightly on the day, but the visible change comes from new collagen: Merz says Ultherapy's final result takes two to three months, and the Korean machines rely on the same healing response.

How much lift? In a 2024 study, 50 faces were scanned in 3D before and immediately after a 700-shot Ultraformer MPT treatment. Measured lift ran from 1.24 mm at the forehead to 3.53 mm at the neck, with the jowl at 2.90 mm. Those figures include same-day swelling and the study had no untreated comparison group, so read them as an upper estimate. For Ultherapy, a 2025 meta-analysis of 42 studies found that 89% of patients showed some improvement as rated by investigators, although the authors warn that neutral responses may have been counted as positive, and around 80% of the studies followed patients for six months or less.

How long it lasts. Merz says one Ultherapy treatment can last a year or more on the face, and clinics quote similar figures for Ultraformer and Liftera. A 2015 Ultherapy study found improvement was most visible at three months and gradually decreased by six. Clinics commonly suggest yearly maintenance; treat promises of two years or more from one session as optimistic.

Head to head. No published trial compares Ultraformer with Liftera, and the Ultraformer versus Ultherapy trial above has not reported. Claims that one Korean machine clearly beats the other are opinion, not evidence.

Pain, session length and downtime

All three machines hurt to some degree: most people describe a deep, hot prickle or ache with each pass, strongest over bone and at the 4.5 mm depth.

Only Ultherapy has solid pain data. In the 2025 meta-analysis patients rated it 4.85 out of 10 on average, which the authors call moderate, most often managed with oral painkillers or numbing cream. The comfort claims for Ultraformer and Liftera come from their makers and distributors, and no published study compares pain across the three. Ask about energy too: a machine turned down for comfort may be turned down on results.

Session length: Merz quotes 30 to 90 minutes for Ultherapy depending on the area, and Dubai clinics quote roughly 25 to 60 minutes for an Ultraformer or Liftera face. Downtime is minimal with all three: redness and swelling for a few hours, sometimes tenderness for a few days, occasionally small bruises. Merz lists transient nerve effects among the most common side effects in its trials. See a doctor promptly if facial numbness or weakness lasts more than a few days, or for any eye pain or change in vision after treatment near the eyes.

What Ultraformer, Liftera and Ultherapy cost in Dubai in 2026

Published Dubai prices run from a few hundred dirhams for promotional HIFU to AED 14,000 for Ultherapy on the face and neck, and the machine explains only part of that gap.

The table summarises what eleven UAE clinics published in September 2026, using regular rather than promotional prices.

MachineArea or unitPublished price (Sept 2026)
Ultraformer III or MPTEyes and browAED 800 to 1,000

UltherapyFace and neckAED 12,000 to 14,000
HIFU, machine not namedFull faceAED 2,499 to 5,499

Three patterns stand out. Ultraformer promotions cut hard: one clinic's September offer took a full face from AED 5,000 to AED 1,660 before VAT, and another advertises Ultraformer III from AED 1,500 with a touch-up within three months if needed. Liftera is rarely priced publicly: only one clinic we checked published a figure. Ultherapy is often sold per line, so the line count decides the bill, and one clinic prices Ultraformer the same way at AED 16 a line.

A very low price has to come from somewhere: a machine the clinic will not name, fewer shots than you assume, or a cartridge that is not new. Menus that simply say "HIFU" start from about AED 399 on promotion. For prices across every other treatment, see our UAE aesthetic price guide.

Who is a good candidate, and who is not

HIFU on any of these machines suits mild to moderate laxity in people who want a subtle, gradual change without downtime; it does not fix heavy sagging, whatever the brand.

Good candidates are typically in their thirties to fifties, with an early softening along the jawline, a brow that feels heavier, or a softening under the chin and on the neck. Merz describes its typical candidate as someone in their thirties with mild to moderate laxity.

Poor candidates have heavy jowls, loose skin that folds, or pronounced neck bands. That is a surgical problem, because no energy device re-drapes excess skin. Very thin faces need caution too, since Ultraformer's macro-focused energy is designed to reduce fat. Treatment is generally avoided in pregnancy, over active skin infection or open wounds, and with implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers. Mention any recent fillers or threads in the area before the plan is made.

If you have more laxity than HIFU can handle, our guide to how to tighten loose skin in Dubai sets out where devices stop and surgery starts. For a visible lift on the day, compare HIFU vs a thread lift, and if texture and crepey skin bother you more than sagging, RF microneedling works closer to the surface.

What to ask a clinic before you book

Six questions separate a properly planned HIFU treatment from a discount one, and a good clinic will answer all of them without hesitation.

  1. Which machine, exactly, and can I see it? Ask to see the unit, its label and the name of the UAE distributor. The DHA requires devices to be registered under MOHAP rules, so a genuine machine comes with paperwork.
  2. How many shots or lines per area, on my written quote? For reference, a 2015 Ultherapy study used 400 to 500 lines for a full face, and the 2024 Ultraformer MPT study used 700 shots. More is not automatically better: the Ultherapy study found similar results across its range of shot counts. You want a number agreed in advance.
  3. Which depths, and where? In the published Ultraformer MPT protocol the 4.5 mm cartridge stayed away from the forehead and the thyroid area of the neck. Ask for the clinic's map of your face, including where it will not go deep.
  4. Is the cartridge new, and can I see the count? Cartridges hold a fixed number of shots, and replacement cartridges for these machines are sold by third-party sellers online. The DHA requires equipment to be maintained to the manufacturer's specifications, so ask to see the cartridge and its remaining count on the screen before you start.
  5. Who holds the handpiece, and who assessed me? Dubai's rules let trained nurses, supervised by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, be privileged for machine-based skin tightening. That can be fine, but you should know who it is, see their DHA licence, and have the plan set by a doctor who examined your face.
  6. What happens if nothing changes by three months? Some clinics include a touch-up. Ask before you pay, not after.

Licensing and safety in the UAE

In Dubai, HIFU must be done in a DHA-licensed facility by a licensed professional privileged for it; the equivalent regulator is the Department of Health (DOH) in Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) in the northern emirates.

The DHA's Standards for Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures (version 2.1, in force since February 2025) require a DHA-licensed dermatologist or plastic surgeon to supervise these procedures and every device to be registered under MOHAP rules. The standard does not name HIFU. It groups ultrasound skin tightening with other external-machine treatments, a category for which trained nurses and, in its table, even beauty and massage therapists can be privileged. So check the practitioner as well as the clinic: our guide shows how to check a clinic and practitioner on the DHA register.

Serious complications are uncommon and mostly about technique. Ophthalmology case reports describe corneal damage, inflammation inside the eye and lens damage after HIFU on the eyelids, and one 2023 report calls for proper eye protection. If a clinic offers eyelid HIFU, ask exactly how it protects the eye, or skip that zone. Deep passes over the jaw and neck sit close to facial nerves, another reason the operator matters more than the machine.

So which machine should you book?

Choose the operator and the protocol first, and the machine second. If you want the most studied device, with live imaging and FDA-cleared indications, and the budget allows, Ultherapy is the conservative choice. A genuine Ultraformer, III or MPT, with an agreed shot count and a doctor-led plan is a reasonable choice at a fraction of the price, and Liftera 2 is a credible alternative on similar terms with less published evidence behind it.

If you would rather not chase those answers clinic by clinic, that is what we do: we match you with licensed clinics, confirm which machine they run, and get you quotes that state the shot count.
